Yes, but I wasn't actively farming either, I only bothered to salvage a weapon (which would have given me steel) if I thought I might get a weapon component from it.
Edit: I guess I just don't bother playing the trading game then Ander. Money is never a big issue for me, and I only bother to sell things because it's better than having it 'deleted' when you sell it to the outfitter.

These are my rates of materials and dyes.
(Price fluxes depending on quantity purchased.)

20 - 40 gold.
I sell any rare crafting material (steel and up) for:
60 - 80 gold.
I sell any common dye vials for:
150 - 200 gold.
I sell any rare dye vials (black and silver) for:
250 - 300 gold.

You can't tell anything about how the economy is going to shake out from the beta weekends, particularly the last one. Everything was going to disappear in a few hours, so people had two impulses, frantically trade for what they desperately wanted and pay exorbitant prices to get it; or give it away because it was meaningless.
And, has been alluded to in this thread, two things are going to be strongly at work on the game economy: demand and disinterest. Demand I think we all understand. As for disinterest: If you have no interest in trading as a craft or an art then getting what seems like a fair price for something you don't want is a good trade. Selling it QUICKLY so you don't have to spend valuable game time haggling can also be a virtue.
Hustling and haggling appeal to some people, but not everyone, just like in real life. Some people will always pay the marked price, others will always haggle until they are satisfied they got a deal. The genius of this game is that there is room for both kinds, the quick deal for a fair price and the haggler and huckster. The guy that sold his black dye in two minutes for 100g and got back to fighting was probably just as happy as the guy who spent half an hour selling his for 500g. The point is not that one was a doofus or a chump. The point is, they wanted different things. So just like in real life, Caveat Emptor.

This is pretty much exactly the way I am. I did almost no public selling or buying, mostly selling things to the NPC's for WAY less than I could have if I'd sold it publicly.
I gave away everything I couldn't use to friends or guild mates, and they in return kept an eye out for things I might want. I never bought any weapons or crafting materials, I just asked someone on my friends list if they had what I needed. Most were storing the things I asked for, and I was doing the same for them. The only things I sold publicly were Yellow, Blue and Purple items that none of the people on my friends list were interested in. And then, like you said, only because it's better than having it 'deleted' by the NPC.
In my opinion, the economy in most of these types of games is not as important as everyone seems to think.

Salvage and drops are randomly determined, but tend to favor items that aren't vital to armor for your character type. Anet is trying to actively encourage using the trading market. So steel is not particularily rare... unless you're a Warrior or Necro likely to require steel.
If it was too easy, it'd take all the challenge out of the game.
I believe that "uncommon" and "rare" items are only generated from Expert Salvage Kits. Finding cyan-colored weapons that are "highly salvageable" helps too.
The economy will probably be altogether new once the game gets underway, and for the first week, I would expect rare items to be extremely expensive, and then come down again as more people make their way through to the further reaches where they'll get more of these drops.
Supply and demand. So a price guide would be nice, but it's going to take awhile for the economy to stabilize.

scales 75-100 gp
shells 10-15
iron 15 always
any common dye (red blue orange etc) 200
silver 300
black 1200
steel 250
id buy at usually a tenth of that, i made ALOT of money this way, but when the game is released, after 2 or 3 weeks, the prices will be better known, and not as high due to ppl actually having time to find their stuff
